At Atatū
Your stay
At Atatū, the experience is intentionally unhurried.
There is no prescribed itinerary, no pressure to “do” the region, and no performance to luxury. Instead, we offer space to settle in - to reconnect with good food, thoughtful conversation, restorative quiet, and the rhythms of a slower pace of living.
Whether you are staying in one of our hosted lodge suites or enjoying exclusive use of the house, Atatū is designed to feel less like a hotel and more like being welcomed into a deeply considered home.
Arriving at Ataū
The road into Upper Moutere slows naturally as vineyards, orchards and rolling hills begin to replace the pace of town. By the time you arrive at Atatū, most guests already feel a subtle shift.
You might arrive to a glass of local wine on the terrace, the smell of dinner preparations drifting from the kitchen, or simply the stillness of the view stretching out across Tasman Bay.
The house is spacious and understated - warm timber, natural textures, books, art, and places to gather or quietly disappear with a coffee and a view.
Nothing is overly formal. We want guests to feel comfortable quickly.
Mornings
Mornings at Atatū tend to unfold slowly.
Depending on the season, breakfast may include fruit from the orchard, local breads and pastries, house-made preserves, fresh coffee, and ingredients gathered from nearby growers and producers.
Some guests head out early to walk, fish, swim or explore the region. Others linger over coffee, read in the morning sun, or spend time in the sauna before the day begins.
The atmosphere is calm and flexible - attentive when needed, but never intrusive.
Exploring the region
Atatū sits in one of New Zealand’s quietly exceptional regions.
Within easy reach are:
boutique wineries and cellar doors
coastal walks and swimming spots
artisan food producers and galleries
cycling trails and scenic drives
the Abel Tasman and Kahurangi regions
fly fishing rivers and guided experiences
We are always happy to help shape the stay around your interests - whether that means a relaxed wine itinerary, recommendations for lesser-known local spots, or organising more tailored experiences.
Many guests discover that the best moments are often the unplanned ones: a long lunch at a vineyard, an unexpected gallery, or returning home with local ingredients for dinner.
Returning home
Part of the rhythm of Atatū is the feeling of returning after a day out.
In summer, that may mean opening the doors to the evening air, swimming in the heated pool, or sharing a bottle of wine as the light fades across the bay.
In cooler months, the house becomes quieter and more intimate, fires lit, music playing softly, something slow-cooked in the kitchen, rain moving across the hills beyond the windows.
Guests often tell us that this in-between time - neither activity nor occasion - becomes one of the most memorable parts of the stay.
Dining
Food at Atatū reflects the way we like to live and host ourselves: generous, seasonal, and quietly influenced by years of travel and gathering around tables with friends and family.
Meals draw heavily from the region’s produce, wines and artisan makers, alongside ingredients from the property where possible; orchard fruit, herbs, olives and garden produce in season.
Depending on your stay, dining may be:
relaxed shared hosting
private dinners
casual platters and local wines
or recommendations and reservations at some of the region’s favourite places
The emphasis is always on warmth, simplicity and quality rather than formality.
Space to connect
- or disconnect
Some guests come to Atatū to reconnect with each other. Others come to step away from demanding schedules, crowded places and constant noise.
The house is designed to support both:
spaces for conversation and shared meals
quiet corners for reading or reflection
expansive views and open air
privacy when you want it
We are happy to engage as much or as little as suits your stay.
Evenings
Evenings at Atatū are often wonderfully simple.
A soak in the spa under the stars.
A final glass of wine on the terrace.
Music, conversation, or complete silence.
The smell of woodsmoke in winter.
The stillness that settles over the valley at night.
Many guests find themselves slowing into a different rhythm without really intending to.
Leaving
Departures from Atatū are usually unhurried too.
Guests often leave with a few bottles of local wine, recommendations for places still to discover, and a sense that they experienced not simply accommodation, but a way of living that felt both restorative and grounded.
That, more than anything, is what we hope people take with them from their time here.
